Steinhatchee Fiddler Crab Festival

The Steinhatchee Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 2nd Annual Fiddler Crab Festival on February 12th through the 14th at the Steinhatchee Community Center, which overlooks the beautiful Steinhatchee River. The festival will be a two-and-a-half day event with lots of entertainment and fun.

The festival will kick off Friday night,February 12th, with a free concert featuring various local artists, followed by a jam session so that anyone who’s feelin' the groove may get up and play. To start the day on Saturday, there will be an open car show with lots of antique and custom cars. The car show will start at 10 a.m. and go through 3 p.m. There is a $10 registration fee for anyone who would like to bring their car to show. Also, there will be a car trivia contest, a 50/50 prize with door prizes and a best of show prize, with oldies music from the 50s and 60s by the Big “D.” For any questions or more info, contact Dan Horton at 352-213-8904.

Miami plays host to plenty of celebrities and heroes of many stripes, but even for Miami, the group that assembled in the city on 11 May 2009 was unusual to say the least. You won’t see these folks on television--far from it. They’re usually alone on the high seas, tending fishing gear from the heaving decks of their boats – and these aren’t the industrial fishing vessels of television fame, but the much smaller craft found in artisanal fisheries. What makes these commercial fishermen so significant is that when they’re not earning a living from the sea, they work to bring sustainable fishing, and good habitat management practices to Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico waters.

A soldier lived by his sword, and the care put into maintaining his weapon often meant life or death. While we don’t deal with mortal matters in fishing, our “weapon” is our fishing rod, and reasonable care and maintenance is required to keep us in the fight. We often hear about reel care, but not about how to keep our fishing rods in top condition, and even then, usually only minimal advice about how to clean them. As a working captain, I need my fishing rods to last as long, and look as good as possible, while giving my anglers every possibility of catching a big fish. Here are a few tips to keep your fishing rods looking good and lasting for a long time.
